SUSPENSION

SUSPENSION                                                                Mission Finished

Cv Joints = bus type 2 inners & bug outters, using bug axles. its said bus t2 holds up bigger angle degrees n plus same splines as the bug axles its just u have to machine the splines longer so it'll slide further on the axle. you can always go to the porsche cv's but i got a pair off of a buddy on volksrods.com farely cheap, the original lobro kind.

Remove one of the cv joints on one end of the bug axle. i used a thin flat blade screwdriver and pry the clip off. Then you can slide off the cv joint if its hard to come off use a puller. Then grab behind the boot and pull or push the whole thing off.

Next = Theres different inputs and views on this . i used the best way i knew how since i dont own a high dollar fab shop. if this method dont last long for my conversion, i will go with conversion stub axles, and use type 2 bus joints on outters, so i'll have both bus joints on axle. Nevertheless heres the most sensible method i found that works for alot of people on a budget. i used a thin cut off wheel on a grinder and cut about 1/8 off the shoulder and then taking a dremel with a thin cut blade i cut my grooves or splines back further, which enables me to put on the bus cv against the shoulder.

Although i had to recut a groove at the end for the c clip. repack moly grease in the joint, clean up and install.

Note: the washer plates that the cv bolts goes through on the bus joints your going have to drill the hole out wider so you can use the beetle/bug stock washer plates due to the bus cv joint bolt holes are wider by a hair.

Machine or grind the shoulder back to accept the bigger bus Type 2 cv joints. Keeping the shoulder rounded. I Didn't have a machine lathe so i used a cut off wheel with very steady steady hands.

1st picture  - you'll want to measure all around the same distance. i did 1/8 width and taped it off n remeasured to make sure.
then use a cut off wheel on grinder with steady hand you can grind that off. as showing in 2nd picture. Making sure it feels level all around n no humps.
3rd picture - if you look closely theres a little ridge against the end of the splines. i steady my hand with the cut off wheel on grinder and barely touch that ridge and not hittin the splines. you have to work with the cut off wheel and have it working like a grinder.. instead of lettin it cut. make it grind by barely lettin it touch and weave it steady back n forth.
4th picture - i use a dremel and a tiny thin cut wheel as showing in picture, this is to get the end of the shoulder level to where the cup washer will fit level. You want to use that wheel to make  against that shoulder level and flat like and on top later will round it off. i also had to use that same little wheel to grind the grooves back further so the cv joint will slide further down the splines. You have to look closely to see the grooves going further back to the shoulder in that picture. it will leave little marks on shoulder so i took a little grindin wheel on dremel and rounded that shoulder edge a little. not much . just takes a little.
you should put on the boot first, cup washer, then slide the bus cv joint on, i had to use a sledge hammer and tap around the top so it'll go on down the splines/grooves. Check the cup washer n see if the joint is against it.. when it is the c clip groove on the end of the axle is barely showing. not enough to put it on there. so i  use the grinder with the cut off wheel and slide it against the end of joint and go around the splines n recut the same groove similar. you'll have enough of the splines at the end after you put on the c clip. it worked for me.
i will post a pic of the outcome.

Wheel Adapters

Picture
These Adapters will allow me to use Porsche Cookie Cutter wheels on my Bug. They are two piece and my wheels are 15 x 7 fronts n rears. I'll widen my fenders out but thats listed under body link above. Down the road, i'll eventually go with disk brakes vw super beetle.

Wheels: since most of the clear was off the lips on the porsche rims, i went ahead n sanded what was left and it will leave a machined aluminum look. plan to flat black the cookie cutter design on inside of wheel and leave the lip machined look.Since we're going for old school theme here. i used 220 + 400 + 600 grit wet with soap
